Pride will usually be birthed when motive is out of place. Once your motive for doing something or learning something is genuine and moral, there will be no advent of pride when you become great at what you do. Once the purpose to what you do is revealed, all that comes will be adorned by humility, and every success will be seen as a service accomplished, not as a favor given. When your service is viewed as the latter, as though without you there would be nothing, then pride sets in.
Most upcoming Musicians now get into music because of the awards and recognition in the business, but that is a wrong motive. The motive or purpose of getting into anything is your passion for it. Your passion drives you along the path of improvement an excellence. It makes you want to be better, not necessarily better than your competition, but better than the real competitor, yourself. Better than you were yesterday.
One of the key mistakes that the gifted individuals make, people who know they have a gift and the world recognizes they have a gift, and they start to promote them very quickly, is that pride easily sets in, and instead of being in a constant learning mode, you go into a proving mode, and you start showboating. The book of Proverbs 16:18 says: Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 11:2 says: When pride comes, then comes shame.
There is no good occurrence with pride when you go through the scriptures e.g. Leviticus 26:19, Proverbs 13:10, Proverbs 29:23, Isaiah 23:9.
Mostly, I encourage Musicians to discover themselves in light of the scriptures. Discover yourselves in Christ. Once you do that, you will realize that everything you do is not about you but about Him. Pride therefore cannot exist when the goal is not you. [See not about you]
Till next time.
