Just as the Cock crow signifies the breaking of a new day in Africa; the cry of a new Baby signifies the birth of a new life; so do the names of some people remind us of accomplishments in certain fields. The name Michael Jordan makes us think of Basket Ball; Steve Jobbs makes us think of Apple products; Einstein of Physics; Edison of Electricity; Michael Jackson of Music & Entertainment; Bruce Lee of the Martial Arts; Arnold Schwarzenegger of Movies & Body Building; Walt Disney of Animation; The Winans family of Music; Kevin Bond of Music & Production; Dr. Dre of Music Production; Pele of Foot Ball; and to bring it home, Panam Percy Paul of Music; Jay Okocha of Foot Ball; Aliko Dangote of Cement & Business; Benson Idahosa of Ministry, etc. Now the question is, does this just happen, or do these people work at it?
You know in the world today, we have a LOT of zealous youths and people wanting to get there, wherever there is, but like the saying of a famous musician, “People don’t want to die, but they want to go to Heaven”. People want to have the luxury, the excellence, the fame, the influence, but they don’t seem to want to do what it takes to get those. We all want to be like our role models, some named above, but we are not willing to pay the price to become models on our own like them.
The problem most of the upcoming and sometimes the good Musicians have is that they tend to focus on what somebody else is doing instead of majoring on what they themselves do very well first.

I would encourage you to bloom where you are planted. It’s okay to be influenced by an outside source, but you have to learn to develop what is inside of you first. Find out what is intrinsic to your culture and develop on that first, then start adding other things and incorporating other cultures to your arsenal. Don’t start off wanting to play like Kevin Bond or Oscar Peterson. They were born in that. They live in that world. You are over at wherever you are trying to mimic something else that is not intrinsically you. You have to be true to who you are. If you are true to yourself, the true you will show up first, and people will recognize that you first.
It’s always scary when you try to delve into the unknown, seeking knowledge of who you are, but it’s needful. Once you discover who you are, it will be easy to incorporate other skills to embellish your nature, and refine your gifts.
Yes! In self-discovery, you are permitted to look upon the great works of others, but don’t stay there. God has given to you your own distinct purpose which you must identify and fulfill. Don’t pass through this world filling up the shoes of some great man/woman, but create your own steps that people will also try to fill up when you are gone.
Those people mentioned earlier also had influences and people that motivated them [most of them though]. Some of them where just challenged by adversity and circumstances, and their motivation came from the need to create a way of escape.
I part with this question. Would you rather be the guy that plays like Kevin Bond? Or would you rather be the guy people play like?
